BYU Experience

What is BYU FlexGE?

BYU FlexGE is an in-person BYU experience where young adults take classes at BYU for university credit and participate in campus life and activities without being formally admitted to BYU.

I want a BYU experience, but I wasn’t admitted to BYU as a full-time student. What can I do now?

You can start your BYU experience as a FlexGE student. Later, you can apply to BYU as a transfer applicant. More information about transferring to BYU after FlexGE is available here.

Can I live in BYU-contracted housing as a FlexGE student?

FlexGE students are encouraged (but not required) to live in BYU contracted off-campus housing.  Click here for a list of BYU contracted off-campus providers.  During Spring and Summer terms, FlexGE students are also eligible to live on campus.

Can I attend BYU YSA wards and stakes as a BYU FlexGE student?

Yes! As long as you’re living within the boundaries you can attend a YSA ward. You can find ward information on churchofjesuschrist.org or specific BYU apartment assignments.

What BYU campus events can I attend as a BYU FlexGE student?

BYU has exciting events happening year-round—from weekly devotionals and forums to BYU sporting events and more. All BYU FlexGE students are welcome to join in the fun.

Can I play sports at BYU as a BYU FlexGE student?

BYU FlexGE students are not eligible to play on BYU's intercollegiate sports teams (including extramural teams). However, you can play on any of the BYU Intramural Sports teams. It’s a great way to exercise and meet new friends!

Are meal plans available to me?

Yes. You can purchase a meal plan through BYU Dining Services.

Which types of courses are offered?

Students can choose any mix of the following that fit their needs:

  • Evening Classes in Provo
  • day or evening classes at the BYU Salt Lake Center
  • day classes in Provo in spring and summer terms

Please be aware that FlexGE students are not eligible to take daytime classes on campus in Provo during fall and winter semesters. A complete list of classes can be found in the class schedule. Use the Advanced Search tool and filter by section types to find eligible courses. A FlexGE academic advisor can also help you plan your schedule.

Which courses should I take?

Here are a few recommended courses for new FlexGE students:

  • A Cornerstone Religion course (REL C 200, REL C 225, REL A 250, REL A 275)
  • WRTG 150: Writing and Rhetoric
  • STDEV 109: Effective Study and Learning
  • STDEV 117: Career Exploration

BYU Major Academic Plans (MAPs) give a suggested sequence of what courses to take each semester for your desired major.  You can also consult with a FlexGE academic advisor to determine which courses will take you where you want to go.

Does this program provide a degree or credentials?

No, but it is an excellent way to earn transferable university credit before being admitted to a university.

How do I know which credits will transfer to other colleges and universities?

The credits you complete as a FlexGE student will transfer to other universities as BYU credits.  Make sure you review the other school’s requirements and transfer equivalencies to verify that your BYU credits will fulfill equivalent requirements there. A FlexGE academic advisor can help you determine how to do this.

Can I attend BYU FlexGE full time?

Yes. We recommend a full-time class load of 12–14 credits per semester (fall and winter) or 6–7 credits per term (spring and summer).

What are my options for traveling between Provo and Salt Lake City?

Your student ID will allow you to ride UTA's FrontRunner, TRAX, and buses free of charge—simply scan your student ID when you board.

To get from BYU campus in Provo to the Salt Lake Center:

  1. Take the UVX bus to the Provo or Orem Frontrunner train station.
  2. Ride the Frontrunner train to the North Temple station.
  3. Walk one block east to the BYU Salt Lake Center.

If you choose to drive to the Salt Lake Center, parking is free with your student ID.

Can I earn Utah state residency while taking courses?

If you are not a Utah resident and decide to finish a degree at a Utah school other than BYU or Ensign College, you can establish Utah residency while you take FlexGE classes and avoid paying out-of-state tuition when you transfer (BYU and FlexGE do not charge out-of-state tuition). Be aware that each school may have different residency requirements.  See the Transfer to Another University page for more information.

Simple Enrollment

Is financial aid available?

FlexGE students are classified as non-degree-seeking and are not eligible for federal financial aid or BYU scholarships. However, FlexGE offers a scholarship based on financial need.  Additionally, students who co-enroll in FlexGE and Ensign College may be eligible for federal financial aid for some FlexGE classes.  For more information see this page
