Character

This institution has no justification for its existence unless it builds character, creates and develops faith, and makes men and women of strength and courage, fortitude, and service—men and women who will become stalwarts in the kingdom and bear witness of the . . . divinity of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is not justified on an academic basis only.
—Spencer W. Kimball
Character is built by holding fast to gospel principles and personal values during challenges
It is also formed by thousands of small acts, day by day, that ultimately shape who you are. As a FlexGE student, embrace challenges, work hard, and live with integrity. Your efforts will play an important part in your preparation to be admitted to BYU.
Embrace the BYU Honor Code
Following the BYU Honor Code is an important step in becoming the kind of student BYU is looking for. Living with integrity, respect, and high moral standards strengthens your character and shows your commitment to BYU. By choosing to uphold the Honor Code now, you're preparing to thrive at BYU academically, socially, and spiritually.

Build Resilience
Sometimes referred to as “grit” or a “growth mindset,” resilience is the ability to bounce back from disappointment and difficult events. As a FlexGE student, you can develop and strengthen your personal resilience. BYU CAPS—with its many resources, including classes, workshops, and apps—can help you do just that. (Please be aware that individual, couples, and group therapy is not available to FlexGE students through BYU CAPS).
Develop Self-Reliance
Managing your time, budgeting your money, and developing real-life skills—like working a student job on campus—help you become more confident, capable, and prepared for life beyond college. With their open daytime hours, FlexGE students are in a great position to take advantage of campus job opportunities. It’s a practical way to grow in integrity, discipline, and independence while making the most of your time at BYU.

Become Financially Fit
Learning to manage your finances wisely is an essential part of building character. Gaining control over your money helps you develop discipline, integrity, and long-term confidence in your ability to provide for yourself and others. The BYU Financial Fitness Center offers free resources and one-on-one coaching to help you budget, save, and make smart financial choices that will bless your life now and in the future.
